Blitz

Steve McQueen's Blitz is a poignant World War II drama that delves into the human experiences during the London Blitz. Our team's involvement was to bring authenticity and atmosphere to both the urban and rural environments depicted in wartime London.

Fire Station

The fire station set was designed to feel like a space directly affected by the chaos of wartime London. Our focus was on the ground cover, using scattered bricks, broken paving, and debris to convey the aftermath of a freshly bombed building.

Every detail of the ground was crafted to immerse the viewer in the immediacy of the scene, turning the floor itself into a storytelling element that reinforced tension and atmosphere.

London Streets

The London street sets were crafted to immerse the audience in the immediacy and devastation of wartime London.

Our team focused on adding layers of dirt, dust, and grime into the pavings, creating surfaces that felt worn, uneven, and authentic to the period.

Scattered across the streets were piles of bricks, fragmented masonry, and debris, representing the aftermath of freshly bombed buildings. The sheer volume of rubble was designed to suggest recent destruction while maintaining navigable pathways for actors and camera crews.

The debris enhances the realism and atmosphere, helping the streets feel alive with the tension, chaos, and resilience of the Blitz. For Fantasy Greens, it was about transforming urban surfaces into storytelling elements

Clifford Lane

Clifford Lane was one of the most emotionally charged sets we worked on for Blitz.

The street was initially designed to feel like a typical London neighbourhood, with homes, pavements, and subtle period details that conveyed everyday life and community.

To depict the devastating impact of a bombing, we transformed it into a scene of destruction and loss. Debris and rubble were scattered in heavy volumes, and portions of walls and roofs were broken and dismantled to suggest collapsed homes. Dust and dirt were layered into the ground, while displaced bricks and household remnants told stories of lives interrupted. The placement of each element was intended to balance realism with cinematic impact, allowing the street to feel both authentically lived-in before the event, and hauntingly devastated afterward.

For Fantasy Greens, Clifford Lane exemplified the power of set design to evoke emotion; turning a familiar neighbourhood into a visceral depiction of loss and resilience in wartime London.

Train Tracks

For the train track sequences we prepared and dressed sections of the tracks with turf and selective planting to soften the landscape and add variety, creating small pockets of natural growth around the railway environment.

These touches added texture and contrast, helping the set feel grounded in a real landscape without distracting from the action.

It was a quieter contribution compared to some of the larger street and rubble builds, but one that gave the train scenes an authentic sense of place.
